The National Palace Museum in Taipei holds an album leaf by the renowned Northern Song poet and master calligrapher Huang Tingjian titled Prescription Writing (Shu Yaofang) ,in which a formula for incense “Yingxiang” was documented. The text reads as shown in the image: the character “ying” in “Yingxiang” does not refer to a newborn, but rather to a “young maiden.” In the Southern Liang dynasty, Tao Hongjing compiled and annotated Zhen'gao (chapter “Yunxiang Pian”), which states: “The divine maidens and their attendants have radiant faces, clear and lustrous like jade. The five fragrances are richly aromatic, like the scent that rises when burning ‘maiden incense.’”
